After our stay in New York, we continued on to San Francisco and sunny Sunnyvale. As soon as we arrived, we were finally able to swap our down jackets for T-shirts – a real upgrade!
On our first day in San Francisco, we took the train into the city and headed straight for “Golden Goat Coffee.” The coffee was really top-notch (the best coffee in all of America)! After that, we went on an extensive walk through (what felt like) the entire city. We explored Chinatown (including the fortune cookie factory), climbed the curvy and steep Lombard Street (lol), marveled at the self-driving cars, and visited the Patagonia store – Anna’s highlight of the day. We then continued to Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 (with 1000 sea lions), the Filbert Street Steps (with the beautiful houses), the Financial District, where we had coffee at “Postscript,” and finally to “Burma Superstar” for dinner. After that, we took the train back, tired but happy, and were so grateful for our Caroline-Taxi!
On the second day in San Francisco, we drove with the cool “self-driving” car (thanks, Susi 😘) to Lands End Trail. There, we looked at the Golden Gate Bridge from a distance – I found it kind of small and not particularly impressive. So, we drove directly to the bridge and crossed it halfway. Now I understand why everyone is so enthusiastic – the bridge is really huge! For dinner, we “accidentally” ended up on Fillmore Street. It’s a really nice neighborhood with many great shops and restaurants. We chose “Pinsa Rossa” and were impressed not only by the atmosphere but also by the food.
Since all good things come in threes, we took another day trip to San Francisco after our national parks tour – so to speak, as a grand finale. We had “Golden Goat Coffee” again because it was so good the first time. Then we went back to Fisherman’s Wharf and tried Clam Chowder at “Cod Mother.” It wasn’t our favorite dish, but it was still good. In the afternoon, we took the ferry to the spooky island of Alcatraz. It was fascinating and somewhat surreal to see what happened there. On the way back, we met the sweetest grandmas who shared their entire life story with us in 10 minutes (including photos of their house, children, grandchildren…). For dinner, we went to “Himalayan Cuisine SF,” and that was really good too.
San Francisco really impressed us – we’ll definitely come back. Until next time!
